Dear Pam:

I have a friend whose father went A.W.O.L while he was in the Air Force in the early 70's and she has not seen or heard from him in over 30 years. I do think she still may have her father's Social Security Number (or Service Number), and the regular birth date/birthplace info.

Could you help her find her missing father? The Air Force has shed no light as to how/why he just vanished 30+ years ago.

Thank you for your time.

Kathy Rudolph

Dear Kathy:

An excellent way to begin looking on the Internet, would be to use Net Detective software. Here's how.

Open Net Detective 8.0 and tab over to the Internet Information Sources section. Next, click on the Category "Invest" and the small "Genealogy" tab at the bottom. Scroll down to Social Security. Inasmuch as it has been some time since there has been contact with her father, the best way to begin will be to check the "Death Index" by SSN. If no records are found she could then proceed to the "People" category and click Military Databases. This will give many sources to locate people by using past Military data.

I hope your friend is successful in her search, but keep in mind that if someone really doesn't want to be found, they may not be in any databases, make it more difficult to search. I'd love to hear how it comes out!

Thanks for writing

Pam
